Content Summary:
Antoinette Sterling (1841-1904), the American vocalist, came to England in 1873, married John Mackinlay in 1875. Lady Jeune, Susan Mary Elizabeth Stewart-Mackenzie (d. 1931), later Lady St Helier and Baroness St Helier, influential London socialite, writer and activist (Alderman of London County Council 1910-27, renowned for her campaigns to improve London's housing), mother of Dorothy Allhusen (Stanley). There are papers of Lady St Helier and her daughter Dorothy in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, donated in memory of Dorothy Stewart Allhusen (see below).
