Content Summary:

Following his retirement from the National Library in 1971, Burmester led an active life for many years. He undertook a number of bibliographical projects for the Library and the Humanities Research Centre, the most substantial being the Guide to the collections (Series 10). In 1976 he edited a guide to the Library's American holdings, America on Record, to mark the bicentenary of the Declaration of Independence. Some of his writings were unpublished. He amassed a good deal of material for a bibliography of cricket, but others were working in the same field and at some stage he abandoned the project. He also edited a volume of letters of David and Jane Cannan, held in the Library, with the title ‘Melbourne in the Goldrush', but failed to find a publisher.

The papers in this series comprise letters, the drafts of articles and bibliographies, reviews, talks and reports. Correspondents include Dan Sprod, Peter Saunders, Allan Fleming, Bruce Pratt, Ron Gilbert, John La Nauze, Bill Thorn and L.F. Fitzhardinge.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The papers were donated by C.A. Burmester in many instalments between 1976 and 1989.
