An international architectural design competition for the new Parliament House was announced in 1979. Of the 329 entries received, five designs, including Madigan's, were accepted into the second stage of the competition. The winner, Richard Thorp of the American based Mitchell Giurgola firm, was announced on 26 June 1980.
