MS 5400 (Class 1) includes manuscript drafts of vols. 1 and 2 of Fitzhardinge's biography of William Hughes, including the complete and final draft of volume 2; extensive notes, newscuttings, and published material and illustrations relating to Hughes, his career, and political conditions of his time, as well as photocopies of documents held at major manuscript collections such as the the Public Record Office (U.K.); photocopies of Hughes' letters, memoranda, and cablegrams; Hughes' educational and medical records; and letters to Fitzhardinge about Hughes.
Immediate source of acquisition:
The original consignment was received by the Library from L. F. Fitzhardinge in 1975. One folder was added to the collection in 1998 via Pauline Fanning. The second consignment was received by the Library from G. F. Fitzhardinge in 2022.
