- Component identifier:
- Series 12
- Content Summary:
-
Singer was active in promoting animal rights on his return to Australia from the United States, drafting a Policy on Animal Rights in March 1974 and agitating on a variety of fronts, including submissions to parliamentary committees and enquiries and direct representation to political parties and individual politicians. The first Australian Animal Liberation organisation was formed in Sydney in 1977 and the Melbourne body was founded by Patty Mark the following year, with the aims of abolishing 'speciesist' attitudes and practices towards animals, promoting a non-exploitative conservation policy and carrying out these objectives 'in the general spirit of the philosophy expressed or implied in Peter Singer's book Animal Liberation.' Singer was Patron of the Society from its foundation and assumed the Chair in 1980, and over the following years took an active role in its policy formulation and activities, including direct protest action and political advocacy.
This series comprises correspondence, minutes, policy statements, press releases, newspaper articles, submissions and representations, campaign material and other papers created and received by Singer as Patron, Chairman/President and member of the organisation.
