- Component identifier:
- Series 15
- Content Summary:
-
The Great Ape Project was founded by Singer with the aim of having all the great apes included in the 'community of equals' and accorded the rights of the human species - specifically the right to life, prohibition of torture (including laboratory experimentation) and the protection of individual liberties - and of gaining acceptance at United Nations level of a declaration of these rights. The project was launched in June 1993 with the publication of the book The Great Ape Project edited by Singer and Paola Cavalieri, a series of essays by 34 contributors who supported the initiative and contributed their royalties to the wider aims of the Project. The book included the text of the Declaration.
