Contemporary portraits and other stories was initially published by the University of Queensland Press in 1975. In 1986 Faber and Faber re-published the work under the title of The drover's wife and other stories.

In 2001 Harvill Press published some of the stories under the title Camouflage. It contains three stories: 'Camouflage', 'The drover's wife' and 'The seduction of my sister'.

Immediate source of acquisition:
Papers in Series 1 (File 1) and Series 2, 3 and 5 were purchased by the Library from Murray Bail in 1981. In 2003 the Library purchased another instalment (Series 1 (Files 2-3) and Series 5) from Bail. In 2004 correspondence (Series 6) was donated under the Cultural Gifts Program.
