Content Summary:
Professor Donald Peart invited me to write a chamber work for performance at the 1964 Adelaide Festival. This was the first time I'd been asked to write a substantial concert work. He agreed to my choice of seven woodwind, brass and stringed instruments, with piano, which seemed to go some way towards the orchestral piece which was what Priaulx Rainier had suggested might be my next project. (I was a bit scared of percussion.) Note: the original manuscript of the hymns Brompton and Camperdown is on the reverse of the last page of Laudes.
