Content Summary:
Written for Lauris Elms and the Sydney Wind Quintet. Lauris gave equally excellent and committed first performances of the original version and of the revision. I chose four Latin poems, feeling unable to write a lyrical vocal line forEnglish words, that would be consistent with the style of my instrumental writing at the time. Looking back from 1990, some of the dissonances seemed awkward and unnecessary. Also included is a rough sketch of my arrangements of three Elizabethan Lute-songs, which Lauris requested to go with a performance of Carmina which she and the Sydney Wind Quintet gave for the Beecroft District Music Club.
