Novar letters, 1920-1939
- Component identifier:
- Series 1
- Content Summary:
- Scott first met Sir Ronald Munro-Ferguson in 1914, when Sir Ronald took up office as Governor-General of Australia. After his return to England in 1920, Munro-Ferguson was raised to the peerage as Viscount Novar. Scott remained a friend of Novar until the letter's death in 1934. The series contains forty letters written by Lord and Lady Novar. They are arranged chronologically, and refer to Scott's publications, mutual friends, and British politics. (Novar had resumed his political career, and was Secretary of State for Scotland during 1922-1924). Many of the letters from Lady Novar refer to Scott's use of her husband's personal papers in his work Australia during the war (volume 11 of the Official history of Australia in the war of 1914-1918), and political events in which Novar had been involved. Other letters from Lady Novar, addressed to Lady Scott, are included in Series 9.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- The papers of Sir Ernest and Lady Scott, together with a small number of books, were presented to the Library in 1958 by Miss Diana Dyason, Lady Scott's niece. They had been examined by Lady Scott in 1956, the year before her death, and many items carry her explanatory notes.
