The series consists of handwritten drafts of lectures given to the Shakespeare Society (items 1-161) and the English Association (items 162-173), together with typescripts of four talks for the Australian Broadcasting Commission (items 174-203). Most of the papers are lectures given to students at the University of Melbourne, public meetings, and Worker Educational Association classes. There are also five notebooks of lectures, only one of which is dated, viz 4 November 1889.

- The papers of Sir Ernest and Lady Scott, together with a small number of books, were presented to the Library in 1958 by Miss Diana Dyason, Lady Scott's niece. They had been examined by Lady Scott in 1956, the year before her death, and many items carry her explanatory notes.
