- Component identifier:
- Series 51
- Content Summary:
-
In 1985 the then Minister for the Arts, Barry Cohen, invited a working party under the chairmanship of Hugh Anderson to provide definitions and to draft the terms of reference for an inquiry into folklife in Australia. Subsequently the Minister appointed Hugh Anderson as chairman and Dr Keith McKenry and Gwenda Beed Davey as members of the Committee of Inquiry.
The Committee was asked to report upon the nature, diversity and significance of Australian folklife, existing institutional and other arrangements for safeguarding Australian folklife, and the need for new arrangements in the areas of collection, documentation, conservation and dissemination of folklife materials and support for the practice and development of folk arts.
During 1986 and 1987 the members of the Committee travelled extensively within Australia and overseas, holding meetings and consultations with interested persons and with government and cultural institutions. The Committee's report was presented to the Australian Government in 1987 and was published as Folklife: our living heritage (1987).
The series consists of correspondence, agenda, minutes of meetings, submissions, draft chapters, draft of report, notes, news cuttings, journal articles and miscellaneous published material relating to folklife. Correspondence is with private individuals and government and cultural organisations and relates to matters being investigated by the Committee under the terms of reference of the inquiry.
