Ward enrolled as a doctoral student in the Department of History at the Australian National University in 1953. He completed his thesis in 1956. The papers assembled for his thesis can be found in Series 11. This small series contain lecture notes and seminar papers.

Ward wrote about his time at the Australian National University in chapter 10 of A Radical Life.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The bulk of the papers were purchased from Russel Ward in 1988. Following his death in 1995, a further five cartons of papers were donated by his family.
