World War II, 1940-1971: General files, 1940-71

Component identifier:
Series 5-1
Content Summary:

During 1942 until 1945, McGuire served in the Royal Australian Navy Volunteer Reserve and performed intelligence duties in Melbourne as deputy director of psychological warfare, Far Eastern Liaison Office. During this time he made 400 short wave radio broadcasts containing news and information throughout South East Asia.

Series 5 comprises a large, numbered sequence of Far Eastern Liaison Office (FELO) newspaper cutting files together with a smaller group of general files, arranged chronologically.

Series 4 folder 1 contains an index to the sequence of newspaper cuttings and also to a sequence of Special Division files. Mrs McGuire indicated to the Library that McGuire had destroyed a quantity of his World War II records, and it appears that this included all but one of the Special Division files listed in 4/1. Some files contain related material added by McGuire after 1945.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The collection was donated to the Library by Frances McGuire in 1980, 1984 and 1993. A small quantity of material from the 1980 instalment was purchased by the Library. Paul McGuire destroyed parts of his papers (particularly relating to the 1939-45 War) shortly before his death.
