Content Summary:

McGuire was Australian Minister to Italy in 1954-1957 and continued to serve when his position was renamed Australian Ambassador to Italy during 1957 to 1959. In 1959, McGuire represented Australia at the funeral of Pope Pius XII and the coronation of Pope John XXIII.

The series comprises correspondence files (folders 1-21), mainly with the Minister and Secretary for the Department of External Affairs. The correspondence files include copies of official memoranda, reports and despatches and are arranged roughly chronologically. Folders 22-31 contain correspondence and other papers relating to official tours and visits by McGuire. Folders 32-57 contain financial records while other papers such as notebooks, newspaper cuttings and printed matter are in folders 58-65.

Correspondents include Sir Thomas White, Sir John Bunting, Sir Arthur Tange, Lord Casey, and Ewen Waterman.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The collection was donated to the Library by Frances McGuire in 1980, 1984 and 1993. A small quantity of material from the 1980 instalment was purchased by the Library. Paul McGuire destroyed parts of his papers (particularly relating to the 1939-45 War) shortly before his death.
