In 1984, Molony spent one year in Rome, undertaking research in the Vatican Archives. His book, The worker question: a new historical perspective on Rerum novarum, about the encyclical letter entitled Rerum Novarum issued by Pope Leo XIII in 1891, is the result of this research. It was published by Collins Dove, Melbourne, in 1991.

The papers in this series include correspondence with publishers (1990-91) and colleagues, including Charles Mayne (to whom the book is dedicated), Bede Nairn and Tony Gill.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The bulk of the papers were acquired from John Molony in 1998, under the Taxation Incentives for the Arts Scheme (TIAS). Three earlier small consignments were received from Molony - two donated in 1981 and 1985 and one acquired under the TIAS in 1989.
