In 1990, Molony took up the appointment of the Keith Cameron Professorship of Australian History at University College, Dublin. During this time he undertook the research for his book A soul came into Ireland: Thomas Davis, 1814-1845, the biography of the 19th century Irish patriot Thomas Davis. It was published by Geography Publications, Dublin, in 1995.

The bulk of the papers contained in this series comprise research material relating to the book. Also included is correspondence, mostly between Molony and William Nolan of Geography Publications, regarding the writing, editing and publication of the book.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The bulk of the papers were acquired from John Molony in 1998, under the Taxation Incentives for the Arts Scheme (TIAS). Three earlier small consignments were received from Molony - two donated in 1981 and 1985 and one acquired under the TIAS in 1989.
