Content Summary:

The series chiefly comprises a series of letters between Passmore and Duckworth and Co with whom he had a lengthy and productive association that began with the publication of One hundred years of philosophy. Passmore also enjoyed a good working relationship with the University of Melbourne Press which published a number of his early works, including Reading and remembering (1942).

Also filed here are letters exchanged between Passmore and a number of academic journals including Quadrant, New literary history, History and theory, Journal of philosophy and Arts international. As well as submitting articles for publication, Passmore regularly contributed book reviews, and edited work by other writers.

Among the editors, publishing staff and academics whose correspondence is represented in this series are Ralph Cohen, Colin Haycroft, Deborah Blake, Peter Hume, Barbara Perkins, Beatrice Davis, Alan Stout, James Fitzsimmons, Colin Hayes, Carl C. Hempel, Valerie Willey, Michael Dover, Peter Hopkins, Brian Southam, Hugh Stretton, Warren Hogan and Mervyn Horder.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The philosopher John Passmore donated his papers to the National Library in two instalments in 1988 and March 1998 under the Taxation Incentive for the Arts Scheme, (renamed in 1997 as the Cultural Gifts Program.)
