Content Summary:

In addition to lecturing, from early in his career Passmore was a regular contributor of articles and reviews to a number of Australian and overseas newspapers and academic journals. The majority of the writings are articles written for academic journals or lectures, some of which were later published. Passmore wrote extensively on the philosophy of environmental politics, education, aesthetics and the imagination. He was an outspoken critic of deficiencies in secondary and tertiary education in Australia throughout his life and expressed strong views on Australia's role in Asia.

This series includes handwritten drafts and typescripts including lectures notes, reviews, articles and typed draft chapters on his youth and adolescence which were to eventually form his autobiography Memoirs of a semi-detached Australian. Also included are a series of draft writings on the connection between art, aesthetics and morality that formed the basis for Serious art.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The philosopher John Passmore donated his papers to the National Library in two instalments in 1988 and March 1998 under the Taxation Incentive for the Arts Scheme, (renamed in 1997 as the Cultural Gifts Program.)
