In 1947, when the diocese of Canberra and Goulburn agreed to take over the Canberra Grammar School from a private company, Bishop Burgmann asked Garnsey to be Headmaster of the School. He was Headmaster for ten years.

The Grammar School papers include correspondence, handwritten notes for sermons (1948-58) and a confirmation course; sermons at the school's jubilee service (1979) and the Old Boys Union (CGSOBU) service (1980); papers on federal aid to church schools (1950-56); notebooks relating to teaching ancient history and divinity; and an annotated typescript 'Canberra Grammar School, an account of the years 1948-1958' by Garnsey.

The correspondence (1978-79), mainly with Paul McKeown, concerns Garnsey's return to the school for celebrations.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The papers were donated to the Library by Bishop Garnsey in 1991.
