The Committee was appointed by the Senate to inquire into allegations by C.R. Briese, the Chairman of the Bench of Stipendiary Magistrates of New South Wales, concerning Justice Lionel Murphy and to report whether Justice Murphy had engaged in any conduct which could amount to misbehaviour.
The members of the Committee were Senator M. Tate (Chairman), Senator N. Bolkus, Senator J. Haines and Senator A. Lewis. As Director of Public Prosecutions, Temby received copies of the transcripts of the proceedings and press cuttings of the inquiries concerning Justice Lionel Murphy.
