Dame Judith Anderson, AC, DBE (10 February 1897 - 3 January 1992) was an Australian-born American-based actress of stage, film and television. She won two Emmy Awards and a Tony Award and was also nominated for a Grammy Award and an Academy Award. She was born Francee or Frances Margaret Anderson-Anderson in Adelaide. Her career began in Sydney in 1915, and in 1922 she made her Broadway debut. Her first major success was in 1924 in New York, and by 1927 she had become a well established star. She returned to Australia five times, fleetingly during World World II, passing through Sydney, Melbourne to entertain Allied troops on the islands. In 1943 she gave a special performance of "Macbeth" for the Australian troops in New Guinea. Her long career was centred on the American stage,but also included film and television. She also appeared with Old Vic. Company in London. She was a great tragic actress especially in the major roles from the Greek plays, Shakespeare, Chekhov and O'Neil. She won the American Academy of Arts and Letters Medal in 1948, and was made a Dame in 1960. On 10 June 1991 she was named a Companion in the Order of Australia (AC), "in recognition of service to the performing arts". The former Lion Theater, an off-Broadway theatre on West 42d Street in New York, was renamed the Judith Anderson Theater in her honour. Link to catalogue record.Link to finding aid.
