Donald Sydney Smith OBE (27 July 1920 - 1 December 1998) was an Australian operatic tenor, who was born in Bundaberg, Queensland and served in the Australian Army in World War II. In 1952 he toured Australia in the Mobil Quest Concerts and the next year he was awarded a Joan Hammond Scholarship to study for two years at the London Opera School. Upon his return to Australia he joined the Elizabethan Theatre Trust Opera Company. When in 1962 Joan Hammond heard him sing, she was so impressed that on her return to England she arranged an audition for him at Sadler's Wells. He made his debut as Don Jose in 'Carmen' in December, 1962. Link to catalogue record.
