- Horace Ernest Stevens (26 October 1876 - 18 November 1950) was a bass-baritone singer, a army officer during the First Wold War, and a singing and choir teacher. He was born in Prahran, Melbourne. He did not begin his career as a professional singer until after World War I when he was heard by Sir Henry Wood in London. Stevens made his debut as soloist with the Queen's Hall Orchestra in 1919. He sang at major oratorio festivals in Britain and the United States of America, before moving to opera. He originated the role of Hiawatha when it was first performed in operatic form at the Royal Albert Hall in 1924. His first American tour was in 1927. He returned to Australia in 1934 with Sir Benjamin Fuller's Grand Opera company, and in 1938 he became a member of the Melbourne University Conservatorium. Link to catalogue record.
