They relate to every phase of Sir John Barry's life, documenting his work as a student, barrister, judge, academic, criminologist, penologist and historian. His articles, Addresses, monographs and other writings, both in handwritten and typescript form, with associated notes and cuttings, form a significant part of the papers.

- MS 2505 was presented to the National Library in 1971 by Lady Barry. An addition comprising a scrapbook of letters and newspaper clippings was received from Joan Hardy (Barry's daughter) in 1997.
