- Content Summary:
- This consignment comprises ballet shoes autographed by two significant Australian dancers. The flat ballet shoe is signed by Sir Robert Helpmann, one of Australia's most significant and internationally renowned ballet dancers, who worked for various ballet and theatrical companies (including Sadler's Wells and the Royal Ballet) in the UK before his return to Australia for his appointment as co-artistic director (with Dame Peggy van Praagh) of the fledgling Australian Ballet in 1965. The pointe shoe is signed by Marilyn Jones, who is of the generation younger than Helpmann, and also one of Australia's most renowned dancers. Jones became founding principal of the Australian Ballet in 1962, where she remained as prima ballerina until 1978. From 1979, she moved into artistic directorship (beginning with the Australian Ballet) and directorship of dance companies and schools for about twenty years.
