Item 4
Extent:
Dated Windsor, 5 June 1820. Manuscript in ink on sheet, 198 x 203 mm, signed by David Bell and two witnesses, docketed verso in manuscript, wove paper watermarked "Harris & McMur… 1814," original wax seal; dated Windsor, 5 June 1820; very good.
Content Summary:
Continuing his acquisition of land at Richmond, Dight here takes over another two acres of the original Luttrell grant, this time for £5 sterling from the Irish convict David Bell, noted as a "settler" of Richmond, New South Wales, the document confirming that Bell had taken over the plot, as "originally granted to Edward Luttrell, and sold." Bell had arrived on the Friendship in 1800 but quickly made good: his ticket-of-leave was soon issued and by 1806, at the latest, he was renting a large farm at Richmond from Dight (see the Muster for 1806). Difficult to track through the early records, Bell was sent to Newcastle in 1813 and petitioned to return the following year; certainly, by the date of the present manuscript, June 1820, he was firmly in Richmond, dying there the following month. (In fact, it is quite likely that the present transfer was done in lieu of a formal estate). Witnessed: Ann Bell (his wife?) and Robt. [Frith?], possibly the private in the NSW Veterans Corps.
