Diaries, 1896-1962

Component identifier:
Series 2
Content Summary:

The series contains pocket diaries for the years 1896-1899, 1901-1902, 1906-1909, 1923-1932, 1934-1939 and 1941-1962. The diaries for 1896-1899, when Latham was an undergraduate at the University of Melbourne and a teacher at the Hamilton Academy, are quite detailed and record his reading as well as his various activities. The later diaries mainly contain appointments and some of them were not used for weeks at a time.

When Latham was overseas he usually started a diary and continued it for some days or even weeks. These diaries have been placed in the appropriate series: 1919 Paris Peace Conference (Series 21), 1926 League of Nations Assembly and Imperial Conference (Series 30), 1934 Eastern Mission (Series 58) and 1955 Milan Conference on Cultural Freedom (Series 71). There are also diary notes on the events leading to the withdrawal of the John Brown prosecution in 1929 (Series 38), and on the events leading to the formation of the United Australian Party in 1931 (Series 49).

Immediate source of acquisition:
The bulk of the collection was presented to the National Library by Sir John Latham in December 1963, a few months before his death. In November 1974 the Library purchased some further papers from a secondhand book dealer. They comprised family letters and photographs, some diaries and papers relating to the High Court. These papers have been amalgamated into the original collection.
