Component identifier:
Series 13
Content Summary:
The series contains correspondence and documents concerning Latham's articled clerkship (1902), his final Bar examination papers, documents concerning his admission to the Bar (1904), and papers on his admission to the New South Wales Supreme Court (1919) and the English Bar (1920, 1926). There is a small amount of correspondence (1914-1935), an index to opinions, copies of opinions (1929-1935), retainers (1915-1935), a notebook entitled 'Fraudulent conveyances', and other papers. Finally there is the transcript of the 1919 High Court case, Public Curator of Queensland v. Davies Brothers Ltd, in which Latham was counsel for the defendants.
Immediate source of acquisition:
The bulk of the collection was presented to the National Library by Sir John Latham in December 1963, a few months before his death. In November 1974 the Library purchased some further papers from a secondhand book dealer. They comprised family letters and photographs, some diaries and papers relating to the High Court. These papers have been amalgamated into the original collection.
