1925 elections, 1925

Component identifier:
Series 26
Content Summary:

On 14 November 1925 the Bruce-Page Government was returned to power with an increased majority. Latham had joined the Nationalist Party a few months earlier.

The series contains leaflets, pamphlets, a notebook and notes for speeches, correspondence, a book listing Party helpers in the Kooyong electorate, a chart setting out the Party organisation in the electorate, lists of helpers and meetings, and a few newscuttings. The correspondence deals with the organisation of the campaign in Kooyong, the arrangement of meetings, publicity, the Prime Minister's views on the progress of the campaign (26 October 1925), and the views of pressure groups, including the Victorian Protestant Federation, the Australian Industries Protection League, the National Council of Women and the Musicians' Union of Australia. There are also letters and telegrams wishing Latham success and congratulating him on his victory.

Comprises Files 1-9 (Items 1-343). Newscuttings in Folder 9 have not been assigned item numbers.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The bulk of the collection was presented to the National Library by Sir John Latham in December 1963, a few months before his death. In November 1974 the Library purchased some further papers from a secondhand book dealer. They comprised family letters and photographs, some diaries and papers relating to the High Court. These papers have been amalgamated into the original collection.
