1926 overseas trip, 1923-1927

Component identifier:
Series 30
Content Summary:

In August 1926 Latham left Australia to attend the seventh General Assembly of the League of Nations at Geneva. He afterwards travelled to London to appear in a Privy Council case and his visit coincided with the 1926 Imperial Conference, at which Australia was represented by S. M. Bruce and Sir Neville Howse. Latham returned to Australia in February 1927.

In this series there are firstly notes, mostly handwritten, for speeches at the General Assembly or dealing with the League, a diary listing appointments (September-December 1926), and rough diary notes. They are followed by the text of debates, journal, and verbatim record of the General Assembly (6-25 September 1926), the report of the Australian delegation (December 1926), some of the papers and reports prepared for the Assembly, and the minutes of the First and Third Committees. There are two letters, one written to Bruce (11 September 1926) and one to Ella Latham (23 November 1926). The later papers in the series consist of Australian and British newscuttings, lists of engagements, invitations, dinner plans, photographs, leaflets, and summaries of the proceedings of the 1923 and 1926 Imperial Conferences.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The bulk of the collection was presented to the National Library by Sir John Latham in December 1963, a few months before his death. In November 1974 the Library purchased some further papers from a secondhand book dealer. They comprised family letters and photographs, some diaries and papers relating to the High Court. These papers have been amalgamated into the original collection.
