- Component identifier:

- Content Summary:
-
In January 1929 the Timber Workers Union began a strike in protest against an award handed down by Judge L. O. Lukin, and especially the extension of the working week. The very bitter strike continued in New South Wales and Victoria until October 1929, with many clashes between pickets and volunteers.
The series contains copies of the 1929 timber workers' award, a Cabinet paper by Latham on the dispute (2 February 1929), press statements, notes on the dispute, a list of unions contributing to the strike fund, and a large number of newscuttings (January-June 1929). The correspondence dates from March-August 1929 and includes letters from S. M. Bruce, the Industrial Registrar, and the Timber Merchants Association of Victoria concerning the dispute and especially picketing.
Comprises Files 1-9 (Items 1-48). Newscuttings in Folders 4-9 have not been assigned items numbers.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- The bulk of the collection was presented to the National Library by Sir John Latham in December 1963, a few months before his death. In November 1974 the Library purchased some further papers from a secondhand book dealer. They comprised family letters and photographs, some diaries and papers relating to the High Court. These papers have been amalgamated into the original collection.
