The papers in this series deal with the formation of United Australia Party branches, especially in New South Wales, the activities and problems of the Party, and its strained relations with the Country Party.

Items 9-118 are letters concerning the affairs of the Party, the correspondents including J. A. Lyons, the National Union, the Australian Women's National League, the Country and Progressive National League, and the Queensland Women's Electoral League (February 1932-March 1934).

Items 119-186 are roneoed papers issued by the Country Party, mostly critical of the Federal Government (1933), and notes and statements on the Country Party, and especially on the Government's tariff policy and the pre-election promises made by Latham and Lyons. Items 187-242 are correspondence with parliamentarians and party officials concerning the 1931 unity conference and attacks of the Country Party (28 December 1931-31 August 1933). There are also newscuttings on the Country Party, the tariff and Country Party criticisms of the Government.

Comprises Files 1-7 (Items 1-270).

Immediate source of acquisition:
The bulk of the collection was presented to the National Library by Sir John Latham in December 1963, a few months before his death. In November 1974 the Library purchased some further papers from a secondhand book dealer. They comprised family letters and photographs, some diaries and papers relating to the High Court. These papers have been amalgamated into the original collection.
