Deputy Prime Minister, 1931-1934
- Component identifier:
- Series 52
- Content Summary:
-
The first Lyons Ministry took office on 6 January 1932 and Latham was a Minister in it until his retirement from politics on 12 October 1934. This large series contains the papers which Latham received or wrote as a Minister, other than those relating specifically to his three portfolios of Attorney-General, External Affairs and Industry.
The first items are booklets, including S. M. Ferguson's The Australian tariff debate and A. C. Davidson's Australia's share in international recovery. They are followed by general correspondence, dating from 28 December 1931-21 December 1934 (items 6-1017). They include memoranda entitled 'Some notes on unemployment' and 'Notes on the coal industry' (21 March 1932); letters which Latham wrote to Lyons from London (May 1932); letters from S. M. Bruce in London and other Ministers, from individuals such as A. C. Davidson of the Bank of New South Wales, and from pressure groups, particularly the Australian Pensioners League; a copy of a letter from Sir George Pearce to the Treasurer on the need for increased defence expenditure (28 April 1933); correspondence with Lyons on various policy matters; a letter from R. G. Casey on Commonwealth-State financial relations (18 January 1934) and from the Taxpayers Association of Victoria; and some correspondence dealing with matters which arose during the 1934 Eastern Mission. The general correspondence is arranged chronologically.
The remaining papers (Folders 14-22) have been arranged by subject.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- The bulk of the collection was presented to the National Library by Sir John Latham in December 1963, a few months before his death. In November 1974 the Library purchased some further papers from a secondhand book dealer. They comprised family letters and photographs, some diaries and papers relating to the High Court. These papers have been amalgamated into the original collection.
