The general correspondence in this series (Items 1-101) deals with cases involving the Commonwealth, the administration of the Attorney-General's Department, the consolidation of Commonwealth Acts, industrial law, the possibility of outlawing the Communist Party, relations with the High Court, and legislation and administrative matters outstanding at the time of Latham's retirement. The correspondents include Sir Robert Garran, G. S. Knowles and Sir Edward Mitchell.
The remaining papers (Folders 2-12) have been divided by subject.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- The bulk of the collection was presented to the National Library by Sir John Latham in December 1963, a few months before his death. In November 1974 the Library purchased some further papers from a secondhand book dealer. They comprised family letters and photographs, some diaries and papers relating to the High Court. These papers have been amalgamated into the original collection.
