Latham first became Minister for Industry in December 1928, but no department was ever established. This small series contains a statement by S. M. Bruce on the functions of the proposed department (December 1928), correspondence with A. S. Elford of the Joint Committee of Shipowners on relations with the Waterside Workers Federation (February-December 1932), a Cabinet paper on the waterside industry (1932), and correspondence concerning the International Labour Office.
A paper by R. G. Casey 'A note on industry in Australia' (September 1946) has also been placed in this series.
Comprises Files 1-2 (Items 1-31). Papers in Folder 2 have not been assigned item numbers.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- The bulk of the collection was presented to the National Library by Sir John Latham in December 1963, a few months before his death. In November 1974 the Library purchased some further papers from a secondhand book dealer. They comprised family letters and photographs, some diaries and papers relating to the High Court. These papers have been amalgamated into the original collection.
