Gowrie Scholarship Trust Fund, 1943-1960

Component identifier:
Series 67
Content Summary:

The Gowrie Scholarship Trust Fund was based on voluntary contributions and provided scholarships for members of the Australian Armed Forces and their dependants, and especially for the children of servicemen killed in the War. It was established in 1943 as an expression of sympathy for Lord and Lady Gowrie, whose only son was killed in North Africa. The trustees of the Fund were Latham, Sir Robert Garran, Sir Claude Reading and later H. B. Piper.

Items 1-170 include the report of the Administrative Subcommittee (1944), lists of scholarships available in each State, the 1942-1943 report of the Soldiers' Children Education Board, notes on the Commonwealth Reconstruction Training Scheme, press statements on the Gowrie scholarships (1945), agenda and minutes of meetings of the trustees (1944-1945), lists of donors, notes on the basis for awarding scholarships, balance sheets (1945-1960), and application forms for Gowrie scholarships.

The correspondence (Items 171-863) dates from November 1943-July 1956, although there are very few letters after 1945. The subject matter includes the draft Trust Deed, investments, meetings of the trustees, the launching of the appeal, relations with the Naval War Auxiliary, existing bursaries and scholarships, the views of Directors of Education and Vice-Chancellors on the criteria to be used in granting scholarships, the appointment of a secretary and auditors, directions for the State Advisory Committees, tax exemptions, and the progress of particular scholarship winners. Most of the letters were written by the various trustees or by the secretary P. Cureton.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The bulk of the collection was presented to the National Library by Sir John Latham in December 1963, a few months before his death. In November 1974 the Library purchased some further papers from a secondhand book dealer. They comprised family letters and photographs, some diaries and papers relating to the High Court. These papers have been amalgamated into the original collection.
