The Saionji Memorial Society was formed in 1951, largely on the initiative of John Galvin, to honour a former Prime Minister of Japan, Prince Saionji, who died in 1940. In 1955 Galvin established a scholarship which would enable an Australian graduate to study in Japan for a year. The first scholarship was awarded to Joyce Ackroyd in 1956. Latham was chairman of the Australian Selection Committee. The series contains correspondence with T. R. Critchley, F. Alexander, K. R. Hodgkin and others concerning the methods of selection. There are also applications by candidates, notes on candidates, minutes (1955-1959) and agenda papers.
Comprises File 1 (Items 1-56).
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- The bulk of the collection was presented to the National Library by Sir John Latham in December 1963, a few months before his death. In November 1974 the Library purchased some further papers from a secondhand book dealer. They comprised family letters and photographs, some diaries and papers relating to the High Court. These papers have been amalgamated into the original collection.
