Content Summary:

The Australian Goodwill Mission which visited Formosa (Taiwan) in August 1956 was led by Latham and the other members consisted of eight Federal parliamentarians, one state parliamentarian, an academic and a former military officer.

The series contains programs of the Mission, a resume of its activities, texts of radio talks by Latham, an account of the trip by J. G. Gorton in Free Spirit (September 1956), correspondence, notes for speeches and notes concerning the Mission's program, publications on Formosa, statements issued by the Chinese Embassy in Canberra, tourist and government publications, an article on Formosa by Latham in Meanjin (Spring 1957), invitations, menus, visitors' cards, many photographs of the Mission, and a few cuttings from Formosan and Australian newspapers. The correspondence (Items 20-83) includes letters to Ella Latham and R. G. Casey and letters from other members of the Mission.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The bulk of the collection was presented to the National Library by Sir John Latham in December 1963, a few months before his death. In November 1974 the Library purchased some further papers from a secondhand book dealer. They comprised family letters and photographs, some diaries and papers relating to the High Court. These papers have been amalgamated into the original collection.
