The Prisoners of War Advisory Committee, which had five members, was set up in September 1944 to advise the Department of External Affairs on problems concerning the welfare and repatriation of Australian prisoners of war and internees in Japanese hands. Latham was chairman of the Committee. The correspondence (Items 1-50) dates from August 1944-June 1945 and deals with the composition of the Committee, meetings, and a wireless message scheme. There are also circulars, reports, and minutes of the Australian Red Cross Society relating to prisoners of war.

- Immediate source of acquisition:
- The bulk of the collection was presented to the National Library by Sir John Latham in December 1963, a few months before his death. In November 1974 the Library purchased some further papers from a secondhand book dealer. They comprised family letters and photographs, some diaries and papers relating to the High Court. These papers have been amalgamated into the original collection.
