Content Summary:

The correspondence in this series dates from October 1960-June 1961 and is concerned with Latham's review in Quadrant of the Immigration Reform Group's booklet Control or colour bar?. There are letters from A. R. Downer about Indian immigration control and from James McAuley about the review and a rejoinder by J. A. C. Mackie and K. Rivett. The remaining papers comprise the typescript of Latham's review and material he collected on immigration, including a typescript written by the Board of Social Studies, notes on immigration restrictions in Malaya, Thailand and Pakistan, Japanese and Malayan publications on immigration regulations, articles by Sir James Barrett on the White Australia policy (1922-1927), and cuttings from such periodicals as Forum (1923), Mid-Pacific (1925), Liberty (1928) and Catholic Worker (1960-1961).

Immediate source of acquisition:
The bulk of the collection was presented to the National Library by Sir John Latham in December 1963, a few months before his death. In November 1974 the Library purchased some further papers from a secondhand book dealer. They comprised family letters and photographs, some diaries and papers relating to the High Court. These papers have been amalgamated into the original collection.
