The first series is the largest in the collection and as source material, the most valuable. It is arranged in date order and each letter has been name indexed by author and recipient. The series covers 1915-1971 but clusters on the period 1928-1933.

The series covers a large variety of subjects. They include many that form the basis of future series, as letters referring to several topics have been filed into Series 1. Although concentrated on specific economic and public issues, it contains good runs of correspondence on the internal politics of the University of Melbourne, the tariff, the Depression, economic development, overseas aid, and many Third World problems.
