Copland was the 13th of 16 children born to Alexander and Annie Copland of Timaru, New Zealand. In 1919 he married Ruth Jones of Waimate in New Zealand. The Coplands had two daughters, both of whom married.
The family correspondence and papers consist of telegrams and letters Copland received and sent to other members of the Copland family, together with letters and papers about the family. The former group includes telegrams to Miss Jones before her marriage and to her mother Mrs F.W.S. Jones, and correspondence with Copland's daughters and sons-in-law and his many nephews and nieces. The latter includes copies of a roneoed newsletter (eg. 'The Copland Family, Australia, in 1960') but is primarily a group of legal and financial correspondence and papers regarding the administration of the estate of Copland's father Alexander (1839-1933).
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- Lady Copland presented the personal papers of Sir Douglas Copland to the National Library in September 1973. Additions to the collection were received from the Copland Family between 1977 and 1981.
