Component identifier:
Series 4
Content Summary:

Copland's business and legal papers have been sorted into one chronological sequence to form Series 4. The majority consists of his financial correspondence but there are also insurance certificates, receipts, rate notices, royalty statements, company prospectuses and reports, bills, papers documenting payments of technical adviser's fees, consultant's fees and director's fees, travel refunds from various employees, and copies of E.C. Dyason's investment newsletters, 1930-1931. The correspondence and cables mainly refer to Copland's investments, purchases, house sales, donations, and travel arrangements. Other financial correspondence, concerning journal subscriptions, is in Series 15 (Orders, subscriptions, and book catalogues).

The material dealing with legal matters is mostly correspondence with Copland's solicitors Davies Campbell and Piesse, and in particular, with E.L. Piesse and later R.N. Darling. Car registration, a defamation action, infringement of traffic regulations and house sales are the types of subjects covered. Other legal correspondence is in Series 3 (Family correspondence and papers).

Immediate source of acquisition:
Lady Copland presented the personal papers of Sir Douglas Copland to the National Library in September 1973. Additions to the collection were received from the Copland Family between 1977 and 1981.
