Articles, speeches and broadcasts - texts and correspondence, 1918-1970

Component identifier:
Series 9
Content Summary:

Copland was publishing articles in the press within a year of his first academic appointment and continued to use the Fourth Estate as his principal platform for public education for the rest of his life. His views on government policy and Australian and world affairs - areas in which he was often directly involved - were offered and sought by editors in Britain, Australia, and New Zealand. This form of writing was undeniably an additional source of income.

The press articles in Series 9 range over the broad horizon of Copland's interests. For example, there are items on the European Common Market, economic growth, the building industry, strikes, the gold standard, the wool market, road construction and unemployment, New Guinea, Douglas Credit, overseas aid, immigration, population growth, budgets, higher education, inflation, training for business, the exchange rate, international liquidity, the economic outlook for Australia, the arbitration system. Letters to the editor and book reviews are also included.

Most of the correspondence, notes, drafts, and cuttings in the collection relating to Copland's articles were received by the National Library already grouped by newspaper. This arrangement has been retained for Series 9, with loose cuttings of articles and correspondence with editors from Copland's general correspondence files being added as appropriate. There are separate groups of papers for the Argus (Melbourne), The Australian (Canberra), The Far Eastern Economic Review, The Herald (Melbourne), The Sydney Morning Herald, The Commercial (Manchester, U.K) The Mercury (Hobart), The Adelaide News, Mirror Newspapers Ltd, The Guardian (U.K.) and The Financial Review (Sydney). Other newspapers to carry Copland's articles or letters represented in the series, but not forming individual files are The West Australian, the Advertiser (Adelaide), the Press (Christchurch), The Chronicle (Adelaide), The Courier Mail (Brisbane), The Daily Mail (Brisbane) The Daily News (Perth), The Sun (Melbourne), The Age (Melbourne), Newcastle Morning Herald, The Sun (Sydney), Evening Post (Wellington, N.Z.) The Bulletin (Sydney), The Christchurch Times, The Daily Telegraph (Brisbane), The Dominion (Wellington, N.Z.) The World (Hobart),The Lyttleton Times (Christchurch), News Weekly (Melbourne) and The Canberra Times.

The principal correspondents, mainly newspaper editors, are Dr E.S. Cunningham, B.S.B. Cook, R.L. Curthoys, Walter Kimmer, A.M. Deamer, Sir John Williams, S.H. Deamer, C.G. Bonney, H. McClure Smith, Walter Cummins, Rupert Murdoch, Maxwell Newton, Rupert Henderson, Rohan Rivett, Sir Lloyd Dumas, L.V. Biggs and Sir Frank Packer.
