Component identifier:
Series 16
Content Summary:

Copland's childhood years in New Zealand were spent at Timaru and (between 1899 and 1906) at the Esk Valley Primary School. He received his secondary education at the Waimate District High School, matriculated in 1909, and gained the School Board's scholarship the following year. During the next six years, Copland was a pupil teacher at Waimate Primary School, a student at Christchurch Teachers' College and Canterbury College, a teacher at the Christchurch Boy's High School, and an employee with the Statistician's Office, Wellington.

Series 16 is a mixture of manuscripts and photographs. The former includes over a dozen notebooks kept at university (1912-1915), an essay 'The School and the community - Waimate District High School', correspondence (1915-1917), some items from the Waimate High School Old Pupil's Association, and some certificates and testimonials relating to his primary and secondary education (1907-1911). The photographs include shots of school classes, sports teams, teachers, the Copland home, and Copland himself before 1917.

Several other series have papers relevant to this period. Copland's military service is documented in Series 5 as well as this series and some very early family photographs are in Series 3.

Immediate source of acquisition:
Lady Copland presented the personal papers of Sir Douglas Copland to the National Library in September 1973. Additions to the collection were received from the Copland Family between 1977 and 1981.
