Rockefeller Scholarships, 1925-1938
- Component identifier:
- Series 19
- Content Summary:
-
In 1925 Copland was invited by the Laura Spellman Rockefeller Memorial's Social Science Division to investigate the teaching of social science in American and European universities and to recommend Australian and New Zealand students for Rockefeller Fellowships.
With two exceptions, Series 19 contains all of the material in the collection relating to those aspects of his 1926 trip overseas directly connected with the scholarships, and to the selection of Rockefeller scholars up to the beginning of the war. The resulting correspondence forms the main part of the series. Included are letters from scholarship winners like A.C.V. Melbourne, W. MacMahon Ball, F.C. Benham and Felix Keesing, academics advising Copland such as Professor A.R. Radcliffe-Browne, G.V. Portus, Dr H. Belshaw and Professor A.G.B. Fisher, and other Rockefeller people like E. Day and J.R.M. Butler. There is also some correspondence with the University of Melbourne and a long report to the Chancellor dated April 1927. A 1926 diary, some notes, cuttings, and letters of authorisation complete the series.
Photographs taken while overseas in 1926 are in Series 14. Correspondence with the Rockefeller Memorial concerning payment for Copland's services is in Series 4.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- Lady Copland presented the personal papers of Sir Douglas Copland to the National Library in September 1973. Additions to the collection were received from the Copland Family between 1977 and 1981.
