Commercial education enquiry, 1930

Component identifier:
Series 22
Content Summary:

In March 1930 the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce established a committee to investigate the alternative forms of commercial training for prospective businessmen. Copland was closely involved with its deliberations, and edited its report. The committee membership, and something of the background to its work, are recorded in Copland's foreword to the report (Training for business) issued for the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce by the Australian Council for Educational Research and published by Melbourne University Press (1931). One of the committee men, G.S. Colman, has also written on the enquiry, in his 'Graduates in commerce' (Economic Record, vol. 36, no. 73, March 1960: 147-150).

Apart from the committee's published report, the Copland collection has some relevant drafts, cuttings, notes, analyses of the questionnaire sent to members of the Chamber of Commerce, and correspondence with Sir Lennox Raws, G.S. Colman, J.R. Darling, and O.W. Darch. All of this material is in Series 21.

Immediate source of acquisition:
Lady Copland presented the personal papers of Sir Douglas Copland to the National Library in September 1973. Additions to the collection were received from the Copland Family between 1977 and 1981.
