Monetary and Economic Conference, London, 1933

Component identifier:
Series 24
Content Summary:

The Monetary and Economic Conference, also known as the World Economic Conference, was held under the auspices of the League of Nations in London in June 1933. S.M. Bruce represented Australia and Copland joined F.G. Shedden, Professor L. Melville, F.M. McDougall, and H.J. Sheehan as his advisers. The Conference worked through two commissions, the Economic Commission and the Monetary and Financial Commission. From the papers that form Series 24, Copland appears to have worked primarily with the Coordination of Production and Marketing Subcommittee of the former Commission, in particular on its Wheat Committee.

Material on the conference includes roneoed memoranda presented to the commissions, roneoed draft reports of various subcommittees, and copies of some memoranda and cables from Shann, Melville, and Copland to Bruce and to the British Commonwealth delegation. Draft conference agenda, typescript papers by Copland, mostly on wheat, roneoed statements from the Statistical and Intelligence Branch of the Empire Marketing Board, and a few cuttings were also kept. Finally, the series has virtually a complete set of the daily Journal of the Conference (issues 1-39, number 24 missing).

Immediate source of acquisition:
Lady Copland presented the personal papers of Sir Douglas Copland to the National Library in September 1973. Additions to the collection were received from the Copland Family between 1977 and 1981.
