The League of Nations, 1922-1935

Component identifier:
Series 25
Content Summary:

Given Copland's early interest in international economics and affairs, it was logical that he would be attracted to the League of Nations. He participated in a number of conferences organised by League bodies and attended the 14th General Assembly of the League held in Geneva in October 1933 as a member of the Australian delegation. He was an alternate delegate with the delegation leader S.M. Bruce on the 2nd committee (Economic and financial questions).

Subseries 1 refers to Copland's participation in the 14th Assembly. There is a small amount of correspondence with Major E.C.W. Fuhrman, the Secretary of the Australian delegation, copies of printed reports presented at the Assembly, and the 'Report and draft resolution of the second committee'. A record of the work of both the Plenary and committee meetings is provided by the Journal of the Fourteenth Assembly. The series has copies 1-13.

Subseries 2 consists of cuttings, notes, and drafts of articles about the League, mainly by Copland, 1922-1935. There is also a set of League of Nations Union pamphlets published mainly in the early 1920s.

Series 24 (Monetary and Economic Conference, London 1933), Series 26 (Sixth International Studies Conference, London, 1933), and Series 49 (Australian League of Nations Union) also have papers relating to the League of Nations.

Immediate source of acquisition:
Lady Copland presented the personal papers of Sir Douglas Copland to the National Library in September 1973. Additions to the collection were received from the Copland Family between 1977 and 1981.
